PGA professionals and their club captains from across Scotland are set to battle it out for a place in The Lombard Challenge, a PGA Pro-Captain Tournament.

Newmachar Golf Club will be hoping to go one better than last year when they came agonisingly close.

Captain Robert Lamb will partner PGA pro Andrew Cooper for the qualifying event, which will take place at Crail Golf Club on Friday, August 24.

They will bid for a place in the £25,000 Challenge final over the PGA Sultan Course at Antalya Golf Club in Turkey from November 30-December 1.

Andrew missed out on reaching the final by a single shot 12 months ago and now the club captain believes the Newmachar professional’s potential could see him go close again.

Mr Lamb said: “Andrew is a very good club professional and very committed to the club. But sometimes that doesn’t allow him to play as much as he could.

“So an event like this is the chance for him to show his prowess and get to the final of a national PGA event.

“Last year I think they thought they’d done it as they were top of the leaderboard only to be pipped right at the end.

“But Andrew knows this event well and he’ll carry me around I’m sure. Let’s hope we can go one better.”

The Newmachar captain, whose 18-year-old son Christopher is a promising player and has hopes of turning professional one day, admits his handicap has suffered this year.

He added: “I think it’s something that goes with becoming club captain. I started the year playing off two, but now I’ve gone back to four.

“I’ve never played Crail before but we’ll be going there hoping to do well. I have played with Andrew in pro-am events before - and he’s a cracking lad so I’m looking forward to it.”

Lombard is the UK’s leading asset finance company and is successfully using golf sponsorship as a platform to build relationships with local businesses.

“We’re looking forward to watching some great golf, and hopefully catching some sunshine at The Lombard Challenge regional final at Crail,” says Craig Hillis, Lombard relationship director, who will be presenting the prize to the winners of the Scottish regional final.

“Partnering with the PGA to present The Lombard Challenge, a PGA Pro-Captain Tournament, is an exciting initiative to be part of and one that we are very proud of too. Good luck to all the participants.”
