BIG-HEARTED golfers at Ellon’s MacDonald Golf Club succeeded in raising over £2,700 for armed forces veterans, thanks to a ‘Texas Scramble’ open held on Saturday 10 July.

A full field of fifty-two golfers turned out to take part in the day’s events, which were organised by club members Jim Gabriel and Ron Cunningham, together with some guidance from the Club Council.

On the day, fitting in with the theme, club member Alan Barker created a display of military memorabilia, which attracted a great deal of interest from all present. Entry fees, proceeds from a raffle, guess the amount of 50p pieces in the bottle, sale of wristbands and a donation from Aberdeen Asset Management all contributed to a grand total of £2764-02.

Elsewhere at the club, a new course record has been set by Kevin Duncan. Playing in the Stableford competition on 13 July, Kevin hit a round of 63, beating the previous best score of 64, set by Chris Gilbert on 5 June 1997 while playing in the Junior Championship 2nd Round.

Kevin has come close to beating the record before, equalling the course record in a medal contest in July 2009 - a feat also achieved in August 2007 by John Godward, playing in the Gary Riddell final.

The club’s juniors have also been enjoying recent success, with Tom Blakey and Alexander Blair taking part in the Crombie trophy 12 holes as part of The Hands Across The Sea competition. Tom was second in the scratch with 54. A.Blair also came second in the handicap.
