Fred Watson made a spectaular New Year’s return to Seniors’ competition with an excellent Stableford round on Monday17 January on his first appearance of 2011.
His two at the final hole helped him to edge out playing partner Michael Wood, who recorded his second 40 points in successive competitions - an excellent run of improved form.
On a high scoring day, the first nine players enjoyed handicap cuts.

As some of the frost in the ground eased on Wednesday 19 January 2011, the scoring improved significantly in the Senior Strokeplay as 11 players bettered a net par. Two of the leaders, Basil Smith and Don Hawthorn, surprised themselves in their first full competition round of the year. Neither, though, could match Ally Howitt’s eight under par!

Monday 24 January, with the course clear of frost, brought a good turnout of Newburgh Seniors for the First Round of the Winter Eclectic Competition. Six competition strokeplay rounds are planned before the end of February and Jim Warrender got his campaign off to an excellent start with a seven-under-par net 57. This score took him three strokes clear of the fast improving John Stewart in second place.
