Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Returns

Seniors Stableford, May 30, CSS 69

Conditions were like the desert of a Gulf State on the 3rd green for Newburgh’s Seniors, but global warming had not overcome the links.

Sunday’s strong winds had blown sand into half meter deep drifts on the boundary fence and the putting surface on the 3rd hole had a full sand cover. It caused little hindrance to the group’s regular top scorers but it was first win for Richard Clifton whose 40 points with a better inward 9 holes gave him victory over Ronnie Sinclair on the same score.

Leading Scores:

Richard Clifton (16) 40 pts; Ronnie Sinclair (12) 40 pts;

Scott Cooper (13) 38 pts; Bobby Smith (20) 38 pts;

Ron Campbell (26) 37 pts; Ally Howitt (20) 35 pts;

George Duthie (9) 35 pts; Dave Philip (7) 35 pts; Fred Watson (27) 35 pts.

House of Commons Cup, May 31

Newburgh’s Seniors played in the first round of the House of Commons Cup at Longside Golf Club on Tuesday 31 May.

The home side were hosts for this Buchan Seniors competition for the first leg of matches between 6 pairs from each club. It proved to be an excellent start to this year’s competition for a Newburgh team which was keen to improve on last year’s narrow loss in the Final of the Cup.

A victory by five matches to one put Captain Jim Warrender’s Newburgh team in a strong position as they look forward to the second leg on their home course on Thursday 9 June.
