Penalty woe for United

ELLON United were unable to progress in their McLeman Cup tie against Hermes at The Meadows last weekend when they lost out 6-5 in the penalty shoot-out after the teams had finished all square on 1-1 after regulation time.

Hermes keeper Irvine proved to be the penalty hero with saves to keep out Ellon’s Ally Reid and Chris Craib, with Hermes’ Winton slotting home the 16th spot kick to put the visitors through.

There was nothing to choose between the sides in the first half, with United coming closest to opening the scoring.

With six minutes gone, Ally Reid laid off the ball to Steve Gunn whose shot slipped just beyond the junction of the bar and the far post, then nine minutes before the break Martin Foy met a corner from the right only to see his header cleared off the line.

Four minutes into the second half, Hermes’ Freeland met a free kick but United keeper Euan Moffat held on to the central defender’s header.

United hit back with Neill Irvine hooking a high cross into the Hermes box. Martin Foy neatly controlled the ball and turned to fire in a shot which Irvine tipped over his bar for a corner.

United could have been punished in the 59th minute when they lost possession moving forward. The ball was cleared straight up the field by Hermes, but there looked to be no danger until an attempted Ellon clearance rebounded off a Hermes attacker and fell to Gairns, who did well to prevent Ally Reid from breaking clear.

It was Hermes who broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute. Slack defensive work from United was punished when referee Bailey somehow adjudged that a free kick offence had occurred in the box and awarded the visitors a penalty, with Gairns stepping forward to fire home the spot kick.

United were level two minutes later with Duncan Chalmers’ header off Chris Craib’s cross catching out keeper Irvine.

With neither side able to snatch a winner in the time remaining, the tie moved into the penalty shootout with United losing out for the second cup tie running on spot kicks as the visitors went through 6-5.

The winning numbers in United’s weekly Lucky Six draw were 1, 3, 5, 9, 11 and 17 and with no one picking the full set, the jackpot for next week’s draw will be £1000 with the selection 6 from 20.

The winners of the £10 consolation prizes were J Nixon and W Thomson.
