Tarves student aims to win rowing glory to Aberdeen University

Aberdeen and Robert Gordon Universities have revealed the names of the elite rowers who will be battling it out at the 16th Aberdeen Asset Management Universities’ Boat Race on Saturday March 5th 2011. Matthew Burnett from Tarves, now studying at Aberdeen University has been selected to row in the first team.

Matthew a 3rd year Archaeology student will play a crucial role in the boat race this year as he is coxing for the Aberdeen University team.

The university teams will battle it out by rowing 3.5km from the Bridge of Dee to Aberdeen Boat Club in Torry. The race starts at 2pm. Hugh Little, head of acquisitions for Aberdeen Asset Management, says “Both teams are in excellent shape with a high calibre of athletes who have been training rigorously and braving the freezing elements on the River Dee this winter. We’re confident there will be a legion of people who line the banks of the River Dee to watch the two teams battle it out for the big race title. It should be an exciting day of racing once again as the Universities’ Second Crew Boat Race, the Alumni Race and the Media Challenge Race will all take to the waters racing for victory.”

The build up to the big race starts at 12:35pm with the Universities’ Second Crew Boat Race. It will be rowed in mixed eights over an 800-metre course, from the Railway Bridge on Riverside Drive to Aberdeen Boat Club. The second race of the day is the Alumni Race, now in its fourteenth year.
