Thistle fail to jab United

Ellon United 2 - Forres Thistle 1

ELLON United returned from Forres with three league points in the bag following their narrow 2-1 win over Thistle last weekend. United enjoyed most of the possession for much of the game, until the last twenty minutes but were unable to cash in on their approach work until after the interval. The visitors appeared to be content to lie too deep in the closing quarter, and might have paid the price before Forres snatched a goal back in the 90th minute.

United were first to attack, but it was the home side who almost went in front in the 3rd minute, when Daley broke through and sent in a shot which crashed back out off the underside of the bar. Daley had the visitors in trouble again five minutes later, laying the ball square to Henderson who shot well over.

Ellon dominated the rest of the first half, making use of the flanks but without managing to convert any of their openings. With almost half an hour gone, Ellon worked the ball up their right with keeper Bremner managing to punch away a dangerous cross from Greg Simpson. Eight minutes later, Ross Forsyth released Greg Simpson, who worked his way forward before cutting the ball back to Craig Morrison, but Bremner was able to deal with his shot quite comfortably. Craig Morrison then met another Greg Simpson cross, only to be denied by a fine stop by Bremner. The ball broke out to Niall Corser, whose shot was blocked. United kept up the pressure, with Michael Ralton picking out Craig Morrison with a free kick. The striker laid the ball off to Ross Forsyth, whose effort went wide. Three minutes before the break, Greg Simpson knocked a cross from Darren Bailey back into the danger area, with Bremner again managing to prevent Greg Morrison finding the net with his shot on the turn.

United finally took the lead four minutes after the interval. Keith Walker released Darren Bailey on the left, and he outpaced the defence before zipping across a treacherous low ball which beat Bremner and ended up with Thomson only managing to turn the ball into his own net as he tried desperately to clear under severe pressure from Ross Forsyth and Greg Simpson. Good work from the visitors in the 52nd minute eventually saw Ross Forsyth and Greg Simpson link up to find Craig Morrison, whose first time shot curled over the bar.

Greg Simpson was unable to beat Bremner with a free kick in the 59th minute, then two minutes later Forbes might have snatched an equaliser when uncertainty in the Ellon defence ended with Ross Buchanan forced to make a good stop. United made their first change in the 67th minute when Lenny Johnson replaced Greg Simpson and the visitors grabbed their second goal within a minute when Blair Johnstone broke down the left and fired a cross which beat Bremner before nestling in the far corner. The keeper did well a minute later to prevent Keith Walker from adding number three.

Ross Forsyth received a knock in the 71st minute, with Fraser Tait taking over. United were starting to lie deeper at this stage, and were almost made to pay in the 72nd minute but their defence remained firm in a goalmouth scramble, and managed to force the ball away for a corner.

United made their final change in the 81st minute when Lewis Forbes replaced Keith Walker. Ellon almost added another goal in the 85th minute, when Fraser Tait met a corner from Craig Morrison only to see his powerful header cleared off the line. Forres forced a corner in the 90th minute with McIvor making great contact to fire home his first time effort, but the home side were unable to force an equaliser.
