At long last Ellon Gordon Cricket Club have broken their “duck” for the season by winning last weeks Grade 1 fixture away to Cults by 32 runs.
It was sensible batting by Lawrence Meikle and Andy Parks that enabled them to set Cults a target of 116 to beat. At the top of the order skipper Ben Webb had weighed in with a knock of 26.
With not much runs to play with it was imperative that an understrength Ellon side bowled well and that’s where Richie Greenfield came into play opening the bowling and claiming 6 for 25 ably backed up by his skipper with 2 wickets. So after 20 overs Cults were down to their last two at the crease as both sides had only 10 men.
Victory was gratefully received by 32 runs thus helping Ellon to make some progress up the Grade table depending how the other results went on the day.
The scores were Ellon 116 ( L.M eikle 39 ;B.Webb 26; G.Glover 3 for 15 and A.Ali 3 for 19) Cults 84 ( K.Singh 19; A.Ali 17 ; R.Greenfield 6 for 25 and B.Webb 2 for 44 ).
The result means Ellon, while still bottom of the table, have moved closer to second bottom Kemnay/Kintore in their hunt for survival.
Ellon’s opponents this Saturday at the Gordon Park are none other than Kemnay/Kintore meaning this weeks fixture could turn out to be the most imprtant of the season for Ellon Gordon.
Not forgetting, however, that two teams and not one are relegated at the end of the season.
