Ythan CC riders have been in action recently at Echt, Forfar and Powys in Wales.
The club had five members in the DTCC Spring Hilly TT at Echt but the 9am start saw few signs of spring with a strong north- westerly wind and cold conditions creating a testing course that travelled through Garlogie before heading north to the Smiddy then west through Dunecht before climbing across Linton and returning to the finish at Echt.
Top performer on the day was Bill Bavidge who finished 12th but youth rider Lewis Goodlad produced an equally good ride to claim 1st youth and 20th overall.
Mike Giles, Russ Craig and Malcolm Grant also completed the race but for everyone it was a brutal start to the time trial season with blizzards combining with the strong winds to add to what is always a testing event.
In Forfar, brothers Hamish and William Cooper and their teammate Callum Cooper (no relation) had travelled south for the first round of the Scottish MTB XC Series.
In the junior section Hamish performed brilliantly to take third place with younger brother William also performing strongly in the U10 race.
Callum Cooper managed to move up from midway down the field to claim fourth place in the U12 race and rounded off an excellent start to the national MTB series for the Ellon club.
Junior rider Jordan Stronach made the long journey to Wales for round one of the British Junior Road Race Series.
In only his second road race the Ythan rider, from Dyce, was up against the top juniors and future stars of British cycling and to make his task even harder the weather conditions matched those his teammates were facing in Echt.
Riding as part of a composite East of Scotland team, Stronach was gradually worn down by the high pace, testing course and dreadful weather but he put in another strong display to finish the race in 56th place.
The race was dominated by attacks from the top juniors from the Haribo Beacon team with James Shaw securing the win with a well-timed attack.
