Al’s Barber Shop, located on Market Street, opened for the first time in 1977.

Business owner, Alan Wallace, first started his own barber shop in a shed at the Red House Garden (Jet Garage) in the 1960s before buying the former public toilets on Market Street in the early 1970s.

The toilets had closed due to the construction of the current public toilets located at the riverside car park.

The toilet building was due to be demolished but after speaking to council officials Alan said that he would buy it - and he did for just £500.

It took him a few years to get planning permission for the change of use for the building and of course there was also conversion work inside to complete.

A competition was held back when the shop first opened giving customers the chance to name the shop.

One customer suggested the clever pun, ‘You’re in Al’s’, as a nod to the building’s former use.

The shop opened in 1977 and Alan took on the work himself before being joined by Angela Birnie six years later.

The pair welcomed Morag Mundie and Janice Hutton 15 years ago and more recently, Claire Scott, who joined just two years ago.

Alan still runs the business to this day and is delighted to have reached 40 years.

To mark the milestone, Al’s Barber Shop have started a special competition for its customers.

Upon their visit to the shop, customers will be given a loyalty card that once completed, will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a year of free haircuts.

The draw will be held this time next year so customers can enter as many cards as they can manage to complete.

Everyone at Al’s Barber Shop wish to thank their customers for their support over the years.
