Inverurie Academy “Leaders In Sport” programme secures new support from Garioch Partnership

As it moves into its fifth year of providing leadership and volunteering opportunities, Inverurie Academy’s “Leaders In Sport” programme has secured new support from The Garioch Partnership, in the form of new hooded tops that pupils will wear when volunteering.

The programme started in 2016-2017 when it was created by Active Schools Aberdeenshire and the Health and Wellbeing Faculty at the academy, to provide a sports leadership opportunity and a wider experience of community volunteering.

The initial intake of six pupils in 2016 has now grown to a regular group of between 17 and 20 each school year, who help to ensure that many of the extra-curricular activities, that both Secondary and Primary pupils enjoy every week in the Inverurie network, have gone ahead.

Basketball, Football, Fit For Girls, Netball, Yoga, Running and Multisports are just some of the sports to benefit from pupils’ involvement.

Supporting the local area is also a strong feature of the programme and pupils have assisted with local events such as Run Garioch and the Active Schools Running Series, whilst they have also played a pivotal part in the transition sessions run by Active Schools Aberdeenshire for new Primary 1 and new S1 pupils each year.

Additional recognition from the Saltire Awards programme has also enhanced the overall attainment levels for the pupils and several have progressed to further education or employment with additional skills and knowledge.

Garioch Partnership Trustee Nom Wright said: “The Garioch Partnership is delighted to award 'Leaders in Sport' with funds from our Community Initiative Grant scheme, which is supported by Aberdeenshire Council’s Garioch Area Committee.

"We commend the efforts of the young volunteers involved in the initiative and recognise the benefits their contributions bring to the many local young people who participate in the sporting activities they organise.”

Active Schools Aberdeenshire, part of Live Life Aberdeenshire, aims to provide opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity before school, during lunchtime and after school, and to develop effective pathways between schools and sports clubs.
