Balmedie is one of eight beaches in Aberdeenshire to be recognised by Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful says with thousands of people across the country planning to spend summer holidays at home, it’s good news that there are so many award winning beaches around Scotland’s iconic coastline.

As well as Balmedie, Collieston and Cruden Bay, the other award beaches in Aberdeenshire are Fraserburgh Tigerhill, Fraserburgh Waters of Philorth, Peterhead Lido, Inverboyndie and Stonehaven.

Balmedie has been an award winner since 2006, with others joining the scheme between then and 2010.

Barry Fisher, CEO of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “As summer approaches we know that people want to reconnect with our country’s beautiful beaches. Scotland’s Beach Award is the only accreditation for beach management of its kind in Scotland – recognising our fabulous beaches and driving up environmental standards for residents and visitors alike.

“It’s thanks to the incredible work of Aberdeenshire Council and the local communities that we are able to experience these clean beaches with excellent amenities and information about water quality.

“I personally would like to say a massive thank you to them for keeping Scotland’s beaches beautiful and remind everyone who enjoys them to leave only footprints and take their litter home.”

Alan Wood, Director of Infrastructure Services at Aberdeenshire Council, added: “We’re delighted that eight Aberdeenshire beaches have been awarded Scotland's Beach Award status once again by Keep Scotland Beautiful.

"This achievement is a testament to our teams and local community groups, who work tirelessly all year round to ensure our beaches are kept clean and safe for the public.

"It is a pleasure to have these efforts recognised, and we hope visitors will continue to enjoy the beautiful Aberdeenshire coastline.”

All Scotland’s Beach Award-winning beaches are assessed annually and must demonstrate excellent beach management and environmental best practice.
