ELLON Rotary Club’s WAGS dinner has provided one of the organisation’s projects with a major boost.
The event, in the town’s New Inn on Saturday night, raised around £4,000 for Rotary International’s End Polio Now initiative.
It was organised by Ian Bartlett and his Rotary committee members. Speakers for the evening were Peter Mitchell, Debbie Leslie, Doug Winchester and Rob Merson.
Since making a pledge to eradicate polio in 1985, Rotary International, together with partner health agencies, has brought down the number of cases by 99 per cent, putting polio on the brink of being only the second disease ever to be completely eradicated.
There are now only three polio endemic countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria – and with a simple immunisation, children can be prevented from ever contracting the debilitating and potentially fatal illness.
