Appeal for volunteers to fight loneliness

A charity dedicated to defeating loneliness is looking for volunteers in the Ellon area to help organise tea parties for older people.

Contact the Elderly provides a lifeline of friendship, through regular free Sunday afternoon teas, for those who live alone and find it difficult to get out and about.

Volunteer drivers collect guests from their home and accompany them to a gathering in a local host’s home where they can enjoy a couple of hours of tea, cake and conversation with like-minded friends.

Denise Robson, the charity’s Development Officer for Aberdeenshire, said: “We already have around 130 groups in Scotland supporting more than 800 older people so we are very much aware of the need for companionship all over the country.

“Ellon is no different and, if we can get enough volunteer hosts and drivers coming forward, we know we can make a huge difference to the lives of some of the local, older generation who are socially isolated.”
