An Ellon Academy pupil has received great support from the local community ahead of his upcoming marathon challenge.

S3 pupil Bobby Boardman will head to Uganda next month to take part in a 10k race in aid of the Uganda Marathon Foundation.

Since signing up to the event Bobby has been busy training and recently took part in the Run Garioch 5k.

His mum Carron said: “He enjoyed receiving a medal and found the cheering at the finish line very motivating.

“He has also signed up to participate in Ellon parkrun so helpfully this will give him an added boost in his training.”

Carron added: “He is still a little nervous about the 10k race as it’s a hilly route with one hill being named ‘The Beast’.”

Bobby’s fundraising is going well having reached 36 per cent of his £5429.34 target.

The family will host a Race Night at the New Inn in Ellon on Saturday, April 27 from 7pm.

Tickets are being sold in advance for only £15 and this includes a buffet supper and a disco following the races.

A few items have been donated for the auction and bids can be submitted in advance of the night.

Prizes include a four ball voucher generously donated by Newburgh Golf club, and a stunning painting of a Ugandan tree climbing lion painted by local artist Elinor Grieve.
