Premises across the North-East can now upgrade to faster fibre broadband with more than 80,000 premises across Aberdeenshire able to connect to the Digital Scotland network.

The announcement has been welcomed by Aberdeenshire East MSP Gillian Martin after it was revealed a number of homes and businesses have benefited from the roll-out including those in Udny, Turriff and Ellon.

Work is ongoing with Openreach engineers continuing work on the ground into 2019 and across Scotland with nearly 920,000 premises are now able to connect to fibre broadband through the programme.

Hundreds of the latest local properties have been reached in Newburgh, Oldmeldrum and Udny.

It means premises have been connected to the most reliable and fastest residential broadband available as engineers build more Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) to help harder-to-reach homes join the digital revolution.

FTTP is capable of delivering the fastest residential broadband speeds in the UK about 23 times faster than the current UK average.

Gillian Martin MSP said: “Connecting homes and businesses is essential particularly in rural areas and I’m really pleased communities are able to utilise it in both their home life and in work.”
