Aldi is to open its new store in Ellon next month, the Times can reveal.

The discount chain has announced that the grand opening of the town centre supermarket will be on Thursday, September 25.

The building at the riverside location has been steadily taking shape over the last few months and the company this week confirmed
the opening date.

Jonathan Kenny, Aldi store operations director, said: “Aldi is due to open its newest store in Ellon on Thursday, September 25, and there will be a range of offers and prizes up for grabs on opening day for local shoppers to take
advantage of.

“We have already recruited 10 staff in Ellon and the surrounding area, and are targeting a total of 30 jobs for the store with recruitment
still on-going.”

Aldi received positive feedback from the local community during consultation on plans for the site.

The development was given the go-ahead by Formartine councillors last year and work started in the spring.

Traders are hoping the new store will spark an influx of shoppers to the town centre.

Ellon Community Council has also welcomed progress with the new supermarket.

Chairman Sandy McDougall said: “We believe that it will add to the choice of outlets that residents and visitors may use and bring competition to the local retail market.

“We anticipate that it will attract people to the town centre in addition to shopping at Aldi.”

The former Haldanes supermarket in Ythan Terrace had lain empty since the summer of 2011 and there were repeated calls for it to be developed.

Aldi has been recruiting for the new operation and also for its outlet in Inverurie’s Harlaw Road, which is due to open next Thursday (August 14).

The company last month revealed plans to open a new store in Peterhead.

Bosses announced that work is scheduled to begin on the derelict Kirkburn Mill next year, bringing dozens of new jobs to the town.
