ONE of the North-East’s biggest bakers has closed its Ellon store, following a shock decision to pull out of the town.
Murdoch Allan bakery, which has been a feature of Ellon’s Bridge Street for a number of years, announced the decision to staff two weeks ago, with the shop closing its doors for the final time last weekend.
Company Director Paul Allan spoke to the Ellon Times about the decision to explain the reasoning behind the decision.
“The lease which we had on the premises was coming to an end”, he said. “For a variety of reasons, we decided not to renew it.
“We felt that to continue in our current premises, the shop required a level of investment which we couldn’t justify right now.
“High street conditions are generally quite quiet at the moment. With Ellon Academy moving to its new site, it was clear that this would also have an effect on future business, which we had to take into account as well.
“Our staff will, with the exception of one part-time employee, all be redeployed to our other North East outlets.
While the decision will come as a blow to Ellon’s retail scene, Mr Allan insisted that the decision was no reflection upon the vitality of the town’s economy, and offered his thanks to customers for their trade.
“We’d like to thank all of our Ellon customers for their loyalty over the years. Should the right opportunity come along, we would certainly look at re-establishing a presence in the town.”
