PUPILS from Ellon Academy enjoyed a visit to Weatherford’s Evaluation Centre in Aberdeen as part of their Skills for Work Energy programme run by Banff and Buchan College.
The students toured a drilling rig and had the opportunity to sample the work of a Roughneck, Derrickman, Assistant Driller and Driller.
The energy students were given a very broad introduction to offshore and onshore drilling processes including pipe strings, blowout preventers, drill bits and mud pumps.
Steve Morrison, Rig Operations Manager said: “It is good to see the youngsters interested in this type of work as there is still a lot of potential for this area in the Oil industry.
“The offshore companies are heavily dependent on the experienced older members of the workforce and we need to encourage younger people to take up this challenge.”
The Skills for Work Energy programme offers students the opportunity to visit industry related companies so that they can relate the skills they learn throughout the course to real life job opportunities. The visit to Weatherford was arranged to enable them to find out about more opportunities that are available and to see what goes on in a real workplace.
