An Ellon couple celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary last week marking 60 years together.
Edi and Sheila Swan reached their anniversary milestone on Thursday, June 23.
The couple first met when Edi was in the Boys Brigade 8th and 11th Company and Sheila was in the Guides.
Speaking to the Times, Edi (80) said: “We married when I was in 3rd year of Art School.
“There were so many distractions around so I told myself if I didn’t get organised I would never get my qualifications.”
Throughout their time together Edi and Sheila have lived in various locations around Aberdeenshire.
Edi was a former teacher at both Peterhead and Ellon academies, and was the Principal Teacher of Art at Ellon Academy.
Speaking of his time at the Ellon school he said: “Teaching was great, it was absolutely wonderful.”
Sheila (81) briefly worked as secretary at Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen.
The couple have three children; Susan, Fiona and Gary, four grand-daughters; Jane, Heather, Shona and Eileen, and one grand-daughter - Lilly.
Edi added: “I have had a super life.
“Sheila has had two strokes so I run everything now and I have taught myself to cook but I hate ironing.
“Sheila has done a wonderful job over the years and she has been very supportive of me and the children so now it’s my turn to look after her - it’s the least I can do.”
Ellon & District councillor, Rob Merson, who is a near neighbour of the couple said: “I have known Edi and Sheila personally for many years now – and even longer by reputation.
“Edi has made a huge contribution to the North-east cultural scene in art, drama and education, to an extent would not have been possible without the support of his loving wife.
“I was therefore absolutely delighted to participate in their very special day and to congratulate them on behalf of Aberdeenshire Council.”
