Mothers with toddlers at an Ellon Playgroup have hit out at vandals who destroyed children’s play equipment, making a plea for help to find the culprits.
Staff and children at the Gordon Park Playgroup were left distraught following a spate of vandalism to their property over the early weeks of the summer holidays. A number of items in the playgroup’s garden, which forms part of Gordon Park, have been destroyed. These include a plastic playhouse, which had its roof smashed after it was pushed off the playgroup pavilion’s roof, a tricycle and a trampoline. A bird table was knocked over, and tyres thrown into the nearby Modley burn.
Playgroup chairwoman, Jill Graham, said, “This mindless destruction has a really detrimental effect on our children, as they derive huge enjoyment from playing with the outdoor toys.
“We discovered the damage when we came back from holidays. There was broken glass all around the play area, and the roof of the children’s playhouse had been destroyed.
“It’s very upsetting for all the children. Those responsible should realise that what might be fun for them has a big impact on the young ones - I hope they realise that they’ve taken away the toys that the children play with.
“As we are a charity, we work hard to raise the funds to purchase all our own toys. Obviously, however, large items such as those which have been destroyed over the summer cost a lot of money. We have been lucky to receive a donation of a replacement.”
The matter has been reported to the police.
