Ellon man Scott Stephen has two reasons for feeling on top of the world.

He has just graduated from Robert Gordon University and is about to become a father for the first time.

Scott, 33, has a business management degree after studying at Aberdeen Business School.

And he and wife Heather are looking forward to their new arrival next month.

Scott, who is originally from Boddam, near Peterhead, graduated on Thursday, December 12, and has been studying through distance learning while balancing his full-time career as general manager of an NDT supplies company.

He decided to take on a business management degree for two reasons - to have more responsibility at work and looking to the future.

Scott said he was “delighted and relieved” to gain his degree and to be able to use his new skills in the workplace. He is also enjoying leisure time without have to put in a couple of hours study beforehand.

He left school at 16 and joined the Merchant Navy as a deck cadet, going through an apprenticeship to become a navigational officer of the watch on cable laying vessels which took him around the world until he was 21.

While mulling over his career prospects he met Heather, left the Merchant Navy and began working at RSL NDT Limited as a driver.

At that time it was a family-owned business and the owner was keen for Scott to get involved in all aspects of the business and that is what he did.

He is now responsible for the day-to-day running of the company’s three locations in the UK - Aberdeen, Hamilton and Sheffield.

Scott said: “With work I want to use my degree to help me achieve as much as I can.

I think everyone wants to provide their family with the best they can and I am no different.

“I may be back at RGU to top my degree up to honours or even do a different course.

“I’m only 33 so I have plenty to learn and a lot more to experience yet.”

But for now the new graduate is enjoying the festive season and look forward to their baby in January.
