Meldrum area children were bouncing all over Meldrum Academy last Friday, as the Meldrum Schools Basketball Festival 2011 provided 70 local children with an opportunity to represent their school.
Tarves Primary School emerged as winners and will represent the Meldrum cluster at the Grampian schools Festivals on March 18 at the International School, Aberdeen. Cultercullen, Udny Green, Pitmedden and Tarves primary schools took part in the new Bounce into Basketball programme, which culminated in the festival. The popularity of the programme has resulted in the growth of the Terrific Tuesdays Basketball Club with a weekly Under 12 session created at Meldrum Academy.
Erica Jones, Active Schools Coordinator for the Meldrum cluster, commented:
“The pupils and schools involved visibly enjoyed the project and festival and hopefully we will have many new members of our Meldrum Basketball Club as a result!”
Grant Wilson, Grampian Basketball Coordinator, said “It was a great festival to be part of. The players were up and for it and noise during the final was deafening. “
The initial financial support of Senergy was matched by Sport Scotland’s Sport Match scheme and has now attracted significant support from the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities scheme.
