Ellon chef cooks up a storm in competition

A chef at an Ellon care home has found the recipe for success and landed a place as a finalist in a prestigious culinary competition.

John Grover, who works at Meallmore-operated Auchtercrag, triumphed over six other Scottish care chefs to secure his coveted spot in the final of the annual National Association of Care Catering’s (NACC) Care Chef of the Year competition.

Having also made it as far as the finals in 2016, John will be competing this year alongside fellow Meallmore chef, Brian Gollan, who works at Ivybank care home in Falkirk.

John said: “It feels great to be recognised again and make it through to the finals for a second time.

“Competing for the last few years was a fantastic experience and I got some really useful feedback from the judges which I’ve taken on board to make my dishes even better this year.

“It’s also exciting going head to head with another Meallmore chef.

“In fact, four of the seven regional finalists this year were Meallmore care home chefs, which I think demonstrates the high calibre of chefs that the company recruits.

“The standard of chefs across Meallmore is truly excellent and they really raise the bar for the quality of catering across the entire care industry.”

The NACC Care Chef of the Year competition spotlights the care catering sector and the talented, qualified chefs operating within it.

The national final will take place on Wednesday, June 6 at Barking & Dagenham Technical Skills Academy in Barking.
