The latest Ellon Cinema saw a double matinee of Disney’s Planes 2 and an exciting evening screening of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Vicki Morgan returned with a review of the afternoon film.
Planes 2: As with all the animated films coming out now, I was impressed by the reality of the scenery as the aircraft flew over forests and mountains and at times I did wonder if the characters had just been super-imposed onto real-life backgrounds. I’m sure the children in the audience take the quality of these computer-generated films for granted but I never fail to be amazed by them.
Maybe I’m getting old! The surround-sound speakers of Ellon Cinema were put to good use with this film as the sound of planes flew over your head and around the hall – another bit of technology that still wows me!
The plot was good and, I found, not too predictable as in some children’s films.
My daughter and I were both on the edge of our seats on several occasions which is always a good sign that the film had our full attention.
There were some sneaky gags aimed at the older ones of us in the audience – look out for the “Chips” parody (which I thought was very good, I always had a bit of a thing for Officer Jon....). There was high drama at the end of the film with the life of a favourite character hanging in the balance, but you’ll just have to watch it to see if all ends well. Molly gave Planes 2 a whopping 1000/10.
I’ll go for a more conservative 7/10
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: I was very much looking forward to watching this film as I’d heard only good things about it.
Unfortunately the present Mr Morgan has to work night-shift so I have to stay at home to look after our children.
So, if you want to know what this film was like there’s only one thing for it but to go see it yourself!
The next Cinema Day will be held on Sunday, October 12 showing “Boxtrolls” in the afternoon and “Pride” in the evening (To be confirmed).
