AN ELLON couple are celebrating after scooping the National Lottery jackpot of £2,159,664 in Saturday’s draw.

Libby and Alisdair McRae could not believe their luck when they realised they had landed a fortune - thanks to a lucky dip.

Mother-of-four Libby decided to put on another ticket while standing in the queue at the town’s Tesco store.

She explained: “We always put the lottery on but it’s usually my husband who does it. But for some reason while I was standing in the queue chatting to my friend, I thought it’ll do no harm in using up this pound coin on another ticket, so I bought a lucky dip. .

“I thought no more of it until I went to Asda in Peterhead on Sunday morning and had it checked.

“The woman behind the counter told me that I’d have to call Camelot because they can only pay out up to £500. We laughed about it being little over £500 until she informed me that I had all six numbers. We stopped laughing at that point and both turned chalk white.”

Libby, a 50-year-old student, then rang Alisdair at home to tell him the news. He at first thought she was joking but later called her back to double check.

She told the Times: “It’s an unbelievable feeling and we are still taking it in. You hear of other people winning the Lottery but you never think it will be you.

“We’ll take time to decide what we want to do with the money but we will definitely not be moving from Ellon.

“I think possibly a new house and a car and then once the dust has settled, a holiday. It’s almost as though we are dreaming.”

Alisdair agreed it would time time to grasp the enormity of such a life-changing event.

He said: “What it does do is give you piece of mind, financial security and the knowledge that you will be able to look after your kids.” The couple, who have been married for 28 years, have two sons and two daughters aged from seven to 21 .

Karen believes their good fortune is down to a chance encounter with double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah.

She explained: “It must have been my lucky run-in with Mo. When I was finishing the Bupa 10K in May, he lapped me and I moved to the side until he had passed. It was an amazing moment for me and I have felt so lucky ever since.

“Mo went onto win double Olympic gold and I went on to win over £2m – thanks Mo.”

The winning numbers on Saturday, August 18, were 21, 27, 38, 42, 44, 46 and bonus ball was 41.
