Ellon firefighters have distributed nearly £10,000 raised from their Christmas charity collection.

Cheques were presented to various groups and organisations at the fire station last Wednesday..

The fundraisers were widely praised for bringing in £9,200 from the festive collection.

Ellon watch manager Ron Beedie said they would have been happy to match last year’s total of £6,300 but to reach nearly £10,000 was “beyond everyone’s wildest dreams”.

He added: “We visited Balmedie for the first time, so the money will be very welcome for their Christmas lights.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the collection.”

The firefighters were praised for their efforts by Aberdeenshire and Moray local senior officer David Rout, and Ellon and District Councillor Rob Merson.

Councillor Merson, chair of Formartine Area Committee, said: “Ellon and District should feel extremely proud of their Fire and Rescue Team – and I have every confidence they will continue to demonstrate that pride by giving generously.”

The money went to: Firefighters Charity (£5000); Macmillan Nurses (£1000); Balmedie Christmas Lights (£750); Northsound Cash for Kids (£500); Kayleigh’s Wee Stars (£500); S.A.N.D.S (£500); Balmedie Scouts (£250); Newburgh Playgroup (£250); Ellon Luncheon Club (£250).
