AN ELLON couple who have spent their lives raising money for good causes are taking to the road again - on an 80 mile sponsored walk.

Great-grandparents George and Frances Jaffray will walk the Fife Coastal Path in late April or early May, to raise funds for the Friends of Ellon Day Centre and the Ellon Ramblers. The journey, which will take six days, runs from North Queensferry to Newport on Tay, with the couple hoping to average between 14 and 15 miles a day.

The pair have already raised hundreds of pounds for charity after walking the West Highland Way in 2009, and the Speyside Way in 2010. Frances told the Times that the couple had a shared passion for walking, and that they were looking forward to the challenge.

“We’re both members of the ramblers,” she said. “George walks six or seven miles a day, and we both enjoy walking so we’re doing something we love.

She added that the two causes had been chosen because of her involvement with both - as chairperson of the Friends of Ellon Day Centre, and vice-chair of the Ellon Ramblers Association.

“The last time we did a sponsored walk we chose Children in Need because our grandson nominated it - this year, we’re looking to raise money for local causes,” she said.

The couple intend to undertake the walk, despite the fact that George has a knee injury.

He said, however: “There’s no question - it’s the best way to see the country, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Frances adds that despite being great-grandparents, the couple intend to keep walking for as long as they can.

“As long as we’re able to walk, we’ll keep doing it,” she said. “We try to do a sponsored walk every year to benefit local charities. We don’t have a specific target in mind, we’d just like to raise as much as we can, whatever that might be. We’re putting the word out to friends and family, and to the clubs we’re members of, so we’re hoping for a good response from the public. The funds will be going to two very worthy causes.”
