An Ellon man has been crowned Scottish Tradesman 2013 and will now proceed to the national final in the hope of winning the Screwfix British Tradesman of the Year 2013.
Local loon, Neil Birnie, 35, managing director of NB Renewables, went to Glasgow where he won the Scottish title and says he still can’t believe it.
Neil told the Times: “I am still fairly shocked about winning as there were a lot of really strong folk in the field competing.”
Across Scotland 2,500 people entered and five went forward to Glasgow. After various telephone and face-to-face interviews, Neil emerged triumphant.
Neil’s wife, Angela, is more than pleased to go along and support her husband in the national final which takes place in Wembley, London next month.
Neil added: “It’s quite a good time to go to London. Me and the wife will go to Hamleys and Harrods. She will get to do some shopping!”
Neil started up his company, NB Renewables, six months ago, after being made redundant from his job in Inverurie,
He said: “I had nothing, I had no option but to go it alone. I had some good contacts that I used and I worked from my car then I started to build up my customers.
“My mum and dad brought me up to always do things the right way, so it’s nice to get a thank you.
“I’ve been a salesman and I’ve been an engineer.
“In this job I get to be both.”
