An upgrade of a popular Ellon footbridge has moved a stage closer.
The Meiklemill bridge links Gordon Park with Meiklemill Primary School.
The design for a replacement is included in the annual works programme for Formartine bridges under the 2017/18 reserve list with an estimated cost of £30,000.
Local Councillor Gillian Owen has been told by officials that if no additional money becomes available in 2017/18 then it
would be proposed to carry out the design early in the next financial year.
Construction is provisionally planned for either financial years 18/19 or 19/20 from the current bridgeworks rolling programme budget, subject to annual operational prioritisation and secured budget availability.
Councillor Owen said: “This is good news as far as it goes and I am grateful to the officers for their watching brief.
“I felt it important after the dramatic floods of January, 2016, that the council reviewed the safety of the bridge and that monitoring continues. I will also continue to keep my eye on it.”
The council monitors the footbridge every two months.
