A talented teenage musician from Newmachar has been granted funding to showcase her passion for music, through the Nurturing Talent Fund.

Karenza Williams (15) has always had a passion for music and developing talent has allowed her to meet new friends and gain more self-confidence.

The award will fund Karenza’s upcoming trip to Belgium to play as part of the Aberdeenshire Youth Orchestra, where she will get the chance to perform in a range of renowned venues as part of the touring orchestra.

The Nurturing Talent Fund was set up by Creative Scotland and Young Scot to help young creatives reach their artistic ambitions.

The funding is administered by young people for young people, by the National Youth Arts Advisory Group for Scotland (NYAAG), a group of 35 young Scots aged 14-23 from across Scotland who are working towards shaping the future of culture and creativity in Scotland.

Karenza said: “I’m so grateful to receive such a generous award.

“I’m really looking forward to visiting Belgium in 2018 and performing in Bruges and De Panne with Aberdeenshire Youth Orchestra.

“This is my first orchestral tour, and my first trip abroad and I’m very excited - it’s a unique opportunity to perform with other young musicians in a completely new country.”

Karenza added: “It’s going to be a memorable year, thanks to ‘Time to Shine’.”

The Nurturing Talent Fund enables young people aged 11-20 to take part in creative projects.
