At the meeting of The Rotary Club of Kintore on Thursday (May 1), Rotarian Brian Shanks nominated two individuals for special awards.

The first of these was ‘Citizen of the Year’ and awarded to Gael Carlier, the ClubGolf Co-ordinator and a coach at Kintore Golf Club since 2007, when ClubGolf was first introduced at the Club. Gael has led the programme since it began.

The sponsor for the award was Fiona McLaren, Junior Convener and ClubGolf coach who explained that ClubGolf coaching takes place over a period of 18 weeks on Friday evenings (5pm till 7pm) between March and October each year.

Gael has organised a number of coaches to teach about 50 children at different times and at different levels. He has also personally and regularly coached ClubGolf children for two hours per week.

The second award was a Rotary Community Award and was presented to Rotarian Kenny Thomson for his voluntary work within Kintore.

Brian was the sponsor for this award and he spoke of Kenny’s dedication and perseverance over many years, in relation to The Bothie youth project; chairing Action Kintore Ltd, a company set up specifically to manage the project, which culminated in the opening of the facility on December 17, 2013. The Bothie has proved to be a success, not only as a youth facility but also as a meeting place well used by community groups.

Brian went on to speak of Kenny’s commitment to the Community Council over many years, his interest in the Public Hall Committee of which he is now a trustee, his involvement and assistance to Ainslie Reid with Kintore’s annual floral displays, in addition to being an active member of the Club and his responsibilities as the Rotary Shelterbox Disaster Relief Co-ordinator for 90 Clubs in northern Scotland.
