Oldmeldrum Rotarians welcomed fellow club member David Strathearn, North of Scotland fundraising Manager for the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) as guest speaker at their most recent meeting.
David gave an account of his career to date. He had, he explained, qualified with a degree in furniture making, before going on to work for a furniture maker in Norfolk. However, after getting fed up with this, he placed an advert to offer his services crewing a yacht, which allowed him to travel the world.
On returning to dry land, he took a job as a shopfitter in Glasgow, before taking a job with Garden Craft Products in Dyce, which provided supported employment for adults with learning difficulties. He then went on to become Chief Executive of Mental Health Aberdeen, before taking a position with charity SAMH.
Summing up his current job, which sees him responsible for raising funds north of a line from Applecross to Arbroath, he said it was something which he was able to do with real conviction. “I’m part of a 30-strong team in Scotland”, he said. “It’s my job to ask for money and say thank you” on behalf of what he described as a “brilliant” organisation.
