The Ellon First Responders have welcomed a new co-ordinator to lead the group.

Former Ellon Fire Station officer and Pitmedden First Responder Kenny Florence took over the co-ordinator role in June.

The Ellon First Responders are now based at Ellon Fire Station thanks to support from station manager Ron Beedie.

Speaking to the Times, Kenny said: “I look forward to working with the team and putting my skills to use.

“The Ellon First Responders scheme is now standing on its own two feet as it has moved away from ABRRAS so we really need as much support from the local community as possible.

“We fund everything ourselves from the kit bags we use and oxygen tanks to the uniforms our volunteers wear and the petrol in our response car.

“We would like to thank Gillanders Motors in Peterhead for continuing to sponsor our car, it really is very much appreciated.”

The Ellon First Responders have attended call-outs within the town and across Aberdeenshire including Inverurie, Oldmeldrum and Cruden Bay.

First Responders are called out to provide life-saving treatment to those who are critically ill prior to the arrival of an ambulance.

Deputy coordinator Jackie Munro said: “We have been all over the North East providing as much coverage as we can.

“We are looking to purchase another kit bag for use outside Ellon.”

Kenny added: “We currently have 13 volunteers in the team but we are looking for new recruits.

“No previous experience is required as all training is given and you will have the full support from team members, but the posts are voluntary.”

The Ellon First Responders meet on a fortnightly basis at Ellon Fire Station.

Meetings will be held on either a Wednesday or Thursday evening depending on availability.

First Responders are trained to assist with CPR and defibrillation, but can also help with those suffering from chest pain, choking or those who have difficulty breathing.

For more information or to sign up as a volunteer contact Kenny on 07501 753794 or see the ‘Ellon First Responders’ Facebook page.

Jackie added: “The Ellon First Responders are available to visit various community groups and schools to give talks about who we are and what we do.”
