North-east rural round-up

Helen Thomson, president, having conducted the business, welcomed Mrs Sheila Steele a former member of Auchnagatt Rural, to give a demonstration and hands-on activity for the ladies, in the form of decoupage.

This is a most enjoyable craft and the ladies soon got engrossed in building up layers of paper to make two very attractive pictures which were then placed on a little bag and behind a CD case.

Sheila had a few other examples of decoupage to give us all inspiration for continuing with this craft. The ladies all enjoyed a welcome cup of tea, after which the competitions were judged by Sheila, with the prizes as follows:

Pet Photograph: 1 Hilda Brown; 2 Rosaline Smith; 3 Lorna Rose; Indoor Pot Plant: 1 Rosaline Smith; 2 Liz Smith; 3 Eleanor Towler; Flower of the Month: 1 Lorna Rose; 2 Isobel Dickie; 3 Eleanor Towler.

Hilda Brown gave the vote of thanks and Helen Thomson thanked everyone for a most enjoyable evening.

The next meeting is the Christmas Meal at Mintlaw on Thursday, December 12, at 7.30pm. All members and visitors welcome – contact 01358 701224 for details.

Vice-president Dorothy Grant welcomed members to Fetternear WRI’s November meeting with a special welcome to Hilary Size, of Inverurie, who demonstrated cake decoration.

Members had brought along with their own Christmas cakes already marzipanned and under Hilary’s tution iced and decorated them with a highly-professional finish.

Arrangements were made for a meal and visit to the pantomime in December to celebrate the Institute’s 92nd birthday.

Hilary kindly judged the competitions: 3 Mince Pies: 1 Dorothy Grant; 2 Lorna Skea. Christmas Decoration: 1 Dorothy Grant; 2 Betty Lawie; 3 Margaret Salter. Flower of the month: 1 Dorothy Grant; 2 Betty Lawie; 3 Margaret Salter.

The New Zealand trophy was won by Dorothy Grant for most pouints in the monthly competitions.

Lorna Skea ran the raffle and teas were served by Betty Lawie and Margaret Salter.

Jane Fish gave a well-deserved vote of thanks to Hilary Size for her excellent demonstration and generous sharing of coloured icings, sprays and glitter for members’ cakes.
