An Ellon and District Councillor has welcomed the decision to suspend car parking charges in the run up to Christmas.
Councillor Gillian Owen has expressed her delight over stopping parking charges on a Saturday in the four weeks leading up to Christmas as a gesture of goodwill.
Councillor Owen said: “This is a really nice thing for the council to do.
“We have all been waiting for the new car parking regime and whilst all the hitches have been unfortunate at least the council has entered into the Christmas spirit with free Saturday parking and I am sure the residents of Ellon will be delighted with this.”
Councillor Owen added that moves to introduce new parking units in the town are also progressing. Mrs Owen said: “For everyone’s information I am pleased to advise that the machine installation contractors will be in Aberdeenshire from December 1 to remove the old pay and display machines and replace these with the new units. During this time the existing units not being replaced will be updated with the software which will allow them to function with the new tariffs. There will be a short period of time during the works when P&D machines will not be available for use and our Car Park Operatives have been briefed to ensure they are available to advise members of the public and exercise a degree of discretion while on patrol.
“The works will be undertaken on a town by town basis as previously advised, starting in Huntly on December 1 and completing the works in Stonehaven by December 10.
“I hope everyone takes advantage of the free parking.”
