Boost for Ellon Cinema volunteers

Volunteers at Ellon Cinema are celebrating after confirmation of funding to allow them to buy their own projector.

The group has been providing digital cinema events at the Victoria Hall for more than two years, showing recently released films.

It will be amazing and we’re all very excited and happy

The cinema currently hires the independent, Edinburgh-based company Film Mobile Scotland, who provide the cinemagrade projector and server, films and qualified staff.

Despite improvements to the cinema day experience for film-goers, volunteers have always wanted their own projector.

Hall secretary Keith Hart has been applying for funding for the projector for many months without success - but the group now have a double celebration.

At the end of January it was confirmed that Creative Scotland were offering more than £20,000, and last week it emerged that the Awards for All Lottery division has granted the scheme another £10,000.

With money already raised from cinema days, special events, donations and hall funds, a new projector can now be ordered.

Hall chairperson Vicki Morgan said: “We’ll be able to screen the new releases earlier than we do at present and effectively be able to show pretty much whatever film we want, when we want - it’ll be a treat for the town.

“As well as continuing to screen recent films we’ll be able to cater for all tastes as we can be hired for people having a party at the hall, and our more mature residents can have regular golden oldies screened.”

She added: “It will be amazing and we’re all very excited and happy. I’d like to personally thank Keith for all his hard work and I’m thrilled its finally paid off.”

The projector has been ordered and technical surveys will take place soon with the hope that the equipment will be installed and commissioned by September.

Volunteers will be trained by Film Mobile staff in how to operate the server system which will control the film distribution and also the use of the new projector.

Money will continue to be raised to fund the maintenance and replacement of parts of the projector.

There are plans for additional cinemastyle seating in the currently unused balcony area with the intention of having a more private seating area available, if requested.

Possible future plans also include an online ticket booking facility in addition to ticket sales in local shops and on the door.

With the anticipated increase in future production of the cinema, extra volunteers are needed. Anyone interested should contact the hall on 01358 724545 or email
