MSP for Aberdeenshire East, Gillian Martin, has been named as a Hepatitis C Parliamentary Champion by The Hepatitis C Trust.
Comprising of a cross-party selection of MSPs, the Parliamentary Champions will work to ensure that hepatitis C continues to receive the political attention that it deserves, given that it affects almost 37,000 people in Scotland and is a serious health inequalities issue.
Through working closely with The Hepatitis C Trust, patients and relevant experts, the group will seek to represent the best interests of people with hepatitis C in Scotland.
Gillian Martin MSP said: “Hepatitis C is a virus that affects tens of thousands of people in Scotland, yet it is preventable, treatable and curable.
“As a Parliamentary Champion, I am committed to working with fellow members of the group to ensure that the voices of those with the virus are represented in the Scottish Parliament.”
Charles Gore, Chief Executive of The Hepatitis C Trust, said: “Our Parliamentary Champions achieved a great deal in the last Scottish Parliament.
“The re-establishment of the group, which includes many new MSPs, shows that MSPs really do understand the importance of eliminating hepatitis C in Scotland.
“We are delighted that Gillian has accepted our invitation to become a Parliamentary Champion, and we look forward to working with her in the future.”
