Ellon has been saddened by the death of one of its most respected, and principled women, writes Jack Nixon.

Frances Crawford, 79, was given a touching send-off at a well-attended funeral service in the town that has been her home for the best part of 50 years.

Aberdeen-born Frances was educated at Ashley Road Primary School, and Aberdeen Academy before going on to Aberdeen University and Aberdeen College where she gained a teaching qualification.

She spent 20 years teaching in Peterhead, while her husband of 55 years, Fred, fulfilled a similar role in Ellon where the devoted couple lived.

Frances was a member of the first Ellon Community Council on which she was a leading figure in arguably the most effective council known to the town.

A number of that council of the mid 1970s were in attendance at Ellon Parish Church to pay their respects to a woman who had strong views on community matters, adopting a principled, forthright, but fair stance on every issue which came before the council.

But most of all Frances was a loving mother to her three children Patricia, Lesley, and the late Stephen, and grandmother to their seven grandchildren.
