The Formartine Area Committee discussed the Newburgh Traffic management scheme due to be put in place at Knockhall Road last Tuesday.
Ellon and District councillor Gillian Owen said: “Our original decision had been to refuse the application back in September 2014.
“I personally wanted a link road from School Road which would have stopped vehicles having to go into the centre of the village.
“Sadly this decision was overturned by a Scottish Government Reporter meaning the village could suffer increased traffic problems.”
She added: “Too often local Councillors are making decisions for the benefit of residents’ only to find them being reviewed and overturned by Government Reporters.
“These decisions often have unintended consequences and by overruling they can have a huge impact on local areas.
“I believe that too many decisions are being taken out of the hands of local councillors who are best placed to respond to local issues.”
Colin Clark, Scottish Conservative Candidate said: “Planning issues are best made locally, by elected councillors, not by a government-appointed reporter.”
