Round-up from the North-east rurals

At the latest Newburgh WRI, Mrs Jean Robertson opened the meeting by welcoming all present.

The Rural song was sung and the business conducted.

It was revealed that in impressive £525 was raised by the Institute for this year’s MacmMillan Big Coffee Morning. Mrs Robertson then introduced the speaker, Mrs Ann Reid, Balmedie House Care Home manager. Mrs Reid with assistance from her colleague Elizabeth Gollan, gave part of the presentation which she uses to train staff so that they are able to understand dementia better.

Mrs Reid told us that there are young people who also have a diagnosis of dementia although they do tend to have other health issues. Dementia still carries a certain amount of stigma and Mrs Reid was anxious to stress that people with dementia still need to be treated with dignity and have a quality of life maintained as much as possible – for them and for their families. She spoke of some symptoms to look out for, although did point out that no two people will have the same experience of dementia, and said that eventually the person living with dementia will need help with even the most basic of tasks.
