A swan has died after being attacked by a dog next to the River Ythan in Ellon.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon (September 9).

A passer-by who was enjoying a stroll at the time witnessed the incident and called Glenythan Vets after discovering the swan was badly injured following the attack.

The veterinary surgery contacted the North East Wildlife and Animal Rescue Centre (New Arc) for assistance in a bid to provide the swan with the appropriate care.

However despite medical care the swan succumbed to its injuries on Monday.

In a Facebook post The New Arc thanked Glenythan Vets for their “prompt and caring” efforts to save the swan.

The New Arc also urged dog owners to keep control of their pets when around wildlife.

Anyone who witnessed the dog attack is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101.
