The grieving family of a young farm worker killed in a North-east car crash have spoken of their loss.

William Sangster, 19, from Auchnagatt, died and four other teenagers were injured in the accident on the outskirts of Mintlaw on Saturday night.

His family described him as a “larger than life character” who was always smiling.

William was a passenger in a red Ford Fiesta which left the village’s Station Road and struck a tree. he was proncouded dead at the scene.

The casualties were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment to non life-threatening injuries.

The tragedy has shocked the local community and floral tributes have been left at the scene of the accident.

William’s family, including mother Tracey Marshall and her husband Paul Marshall, father Philip Sangster and his wife Sarah Sangster and sister Nicole, 17, and brother Lewis, six, released a statement paying tribute to him.

The former Peterhead Academy and Crimond School pupil studied joinery at Banff and Buchan College but farming was in his blood.

His family said: “He worked for many of the local farmers. He loved it. It was what he lived for.

“He was brought up in a farming environment and always adored tractors from a young age. He bought his own Grey Fergie tractor which had been his pride and joy.”

They said William came from a large, extended family and would be “sorely missed by all who knew him”.

Their statement continued: “He was well-known as a larger than life character and always had a big smile on his face.

“He was very close to his sister, they did everything together.

“You would just always hear him laughing, he was popular with everyone, had lots of friends and was a devoted partner to his girlfriend.”

No other vehicles were involved in the incident which occurred on the A950 Station Road in Mintlaw at about 8.50pm on Saturday.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the accident to come forward with information.
