President Mrs Isobel Elrick welcomed members of Tipperty SWRI to the first meeting of 2015.
After all relevant reports were requested and approved, Isobel welcomed Jim Farrish, governor of HMP & YOI Grampian.
Mr Farish, who has held the position of governor since 2012, gave a very interesting talk on the new prison, from the teething problems encountered when it first opened, to the many educational successes which help prisoners turn their lives around.
He told how education is a very important part of prison life and how many prisoners start by learning the foundations then go on to gain qualifications which are vital to life outside prison.
Members then had the chance to ask questions which Mr Farrish answered comprehensively.
He then judged the monthly competitions, results as follows: Pin cushion - 1st Greta McIntosh; 2nd Lorna Strachan; Flask of home made soup - 1st Margaret Nicol; 2nd Adelaide O’Brien; 3rd Betty Cumming.
A well deserved vote of thanks was given to Mr Farrish and the tea hostesses by Mrs Andrea Elrick-Stewart. Isobel wished everyone a safe journey home.
The next meeting will be in Tipperty Primary School on February 12 at 7.30. Guest speakers are Barry Bartlet and Donna Duncan of Ellon’s Costcutter butchery department.
