A group of Peterhead mothers and their youngsters have raised £2,250 for a local women’s addiction recovery home after a unique fundraiser.

The team recently completed the ‘Toddle for Benaiah’ – a sponsored walk around the town, in aid of addiction charity Teen Challenge North East Scotland

The challenge saw the mums and kids set off from Lido Symposium, walk along the bottom of the prom then back up and along South Road, finishing at Lido Symposium, where each of the little participants enjoyed a celebratory juice.

The money raised is being used for Teen Challenge’s ‘Buy Benaiah’ campaign; a five-year fundraising drive to raise the £535,000 required to buy women’s addiction recovery home, Benaiah, near Stuartfield.

The facility, which allows mothers to continue living with their children while they complete the faith-based recovery programme, Teen Challenge, is currently rented.

However, the purchase of the property would mean the centre could continue to provide females with residential support on a permanent basis and, ultimately, help many more women break free from the horrors of addiction to live clean, free lives.

Organiser of Toddle For Benaiah, Louise More, said: “We are delighted to have raised £2,250 for the campaign to Buy Benaiah, which does great work in helping hurting women break free from addictions.

“We were overwhelmed with the turn out. With Mums and kids, there was just over 100 people there. We really couldn’t believe it – Mum’s just kept coming and coming and it was amazing.

“Thanks to all who supported us – and a particular a thanks to Paul and his team at Symposuim at the lido for their contribution as well.”

Gordon Cruden, area manager of Teen Challenge North East Scotland, added: “We’re extremely grateful to all the mothers and toddlers who took part in the toddle to raise a fantastic amount for our Buy Benaiah campaign.

“People in the Peterhead area have really thrown their weight behind the fundraising drive, with a range of events organized in the area, and we’re hugely appreciative of the support, which has helped bring our fundraising total to £377,000 – 70% of the target £535,000.”
