Runners hoping to take part in the CETCO Ythan Challenge are under starter’s orders.
Online entries for this year’s event open at noon today (Monday, February 9).
If previous years are anything to go by, competitors will have move quickly to secure a place in the highly popular event – last year entry places sold out within two and half hours.
Predictions are that the 2015 race, on Sunday, June 14, is set to be yet another record-breaking event with 700 places available, an increase on the 650 available in 2014.
Now in its 15th year, the multi-terrain 11K obstacle race in Ellon, was the forerunner of endurance races such as the Tough Mudder and the Beast at Banchory.
Organising committee chair Alison Chalmers said: “The demand for places in the Ythan Challenge grows every year. We are delighted that we are able to increase the number of runners who can take part in 2015.
“We fully expect places to sell out within hours, making it our biggest race and we are looking at ways to remove any potential bottlenecks. We’re also planning a few new surprises for our runners this year.”
Kevin Jamieson, CETCO Offshore Services manager, who was one of the runners last year, said: “It is a challenging and fun event for the participants and you never know what you are going to encounter along the route.
“But it is also a very worthwhile community event which raises a considerable amount of money for local causes and we are very pleased to support the good work that they do through our sponsorship.”
Other sponsors this year include McIntosh Plant Hire, NECE, AGT Risk Management Ltd, Ellon Girl Guides and Balvenie Ice Cream. The CETCO Ythan Challenge is organised by the community groups which benefit most from it through an organising committee of representatives from The Meadows Sports Centre in Ellon, Ythan Amateur Swimming Club, Ellon Boys’ Brigade, Ellon Ladies Hockey Club, the Middleton Trust, and 1990 Ellon Squadron Air Cadets.
Entry forms can be accessed via the website http://www.ythanchallenge.org.uk/ from noon on Monday.
