Outdoor space converted into play area for Auchterellon pupils

Members of the Aberdeen Foyer Reach Ellon Team 1 took on the project as part of their 12-week course, which started on August 21.

The group had three projects to choose from with the Auchterellon School outdoor area winning as members thought it was the most achieveable.

Before work began, the group organised a bingo night at the school that raised over £800 to spend on materials for the project.

Development Coach, Fiona McRae, said: “Team members approached around 50 local businesses for the bingo night raffle prizes that contributed to the night’s success.

“They originally had 70 seats out but had to double that to 140 to seat everyone, the response from the community was fantastic.”

Team members said: “Organising the event was stressful but once we saw how many people came along it was all worth it.

“The school staff have been great and really supportive.”

The experience has even inspired some of the members to organise more events like this in the future.

The outdoor area, located in the middle of the school, had been neglected for many years and so the decision was made to turn the space into a sensory play area.

The outdoor space now has a water feature, sand pit, a musical corner and a fairy garden complete with toad stools and fairy lights.

Various materials are used in the area and some had been kindly donated from local firms.

Fiona added: “The team has been utilising various skills and because it is a small group everyone is very close and they communicate well with each other.

“As well as recognised qualifications, they will also leave with new friendships at the end of the 12-week course.”

Depute head teacher, Gillian Anderson, said: “The school is delighted to work with the team.

“The outdoor space had been used in various ways throughout the life of the school and it needed a lot of care and attention so the Aberdeen Foyer team stepped in and they have been so enthusiastic about the project.

“The children are looking forward to using the new area as they have been watching the progress from their classrooms.

“The team had a great turnout at their bingo night and we would like to say a big thanks to everyone that came along and showed their support.”

Gillian added: “The work the team has done is fantastic and we hope to continue this partnership into the future.”
