Better performance from 2nds

Although Ellon Gordon’s 2nd XI have still to win a Grade match this year, they put in a far better performance against Grade 3 leaders Knightriders at Gordon Park last Saturday, losing by 44 runs on a wet afternoon. They were also able to field a full side for only the third time this season, thanks to the fact the 1st team game had been called off.

On winning the toss, skipper Hutcheson asked the opposition to bat first on a very damp wicket. First success was achieved in the first ball of the second over, when Hede had Prasanth caught by Proctor in the slips. Wade followed this up by bowling Manas in the fifth, while Hede removed Vinodh in the next over.

Nishad then joined the dangerous looking Rashid at the wicket, and they added 48 to the total before Fuller trapped Nishad lbw.

After this, Rashid was joined by a series of partners, none of whom were able to match his batting prowess as he scored fours and sixes almost at will. The obvious wicket for Ellon to collect was Rashid’s, and this they were unable to do until Wade had him caught off a skier by Barrett in the 39th over with the score at 174. One further wicket and six runs later, Knightriders declared.

The opposition batsmen certainly dealt with any loose balls, scoring 114 of their total in boundaries over a damp outfield.

Most successful home bowler was Wade, backed up by Hede and Proctor.

Ellon’s task after tea - provided by the Station Hotel - was to go for a victory because if the game was to finish in a draw, Ellon would only earn one point and in view of their Grade position the more points they could achieve the better, even in the event of losing.

Openers Montgomery and Fuller began cautiously against the Knightriders’ opening attack, scoring only 20 off the first ten overs. The first wicket fell in Mohan’s opening over when he had Montgomery caught behind. Ellon’s recent bad luck continued when Proctor was run out ,after going for a second on a misfield 12 runs later.

Barrett then joined Fuller, successfully adding a further 30 to the total before he was caught at deep mid wicket off the bowling of Selva. The fall of this wicket brought about a mini collapse, with a further three wickets going down in quick succession, the last of which was Fuller, for the addition of only 10 runs. Young Matt Sandham, along with Bruce Gardner, added a further 25 to the total before Sandham was caught by Nishad in his haste to get away for a party later. Gardner and Owen then added a further 30 valuable runs before Gardner was bowled by Sella.

Eight runs later it was all over, with Ellon bowled out for 136 - some 44 runs short of victory, and with less than 3 overs left of play. Knightriders had well justified their position at the top of the Grade.

This week Ellon are once again at home, this time to 2nd Banchory who until now have had rather a mixed season and, like Ellon, hace had to scratch one of their fixtures.
