ELLON rugby coach Mike Avis was named Children’s Coach of the Year at the 2011 UK Coaching Awards on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old’s dedication to coaching rugby was described by organisers as ‘second to none’. At Ellon RFC he coaches a number of age bands from under-6 to under-18. He also coaches in the community, in schools and on ‘Street Rugby’, a project in association with Grampian Police, working with less privileged youngsters with discipline problems.

At Ellon RFC Mike’s emphasis on fun, learning and development has seen player numbers increase by 10% in the last year alone, while the under-15 and under-16 teams reached the final of the Caledonia Cup. On top of this players from both the under-16 and under-15 teams have been picked for district and regional teams to compete against other regions in Scotland.

The award was presented by Princess Anne at the ceremony in the Jumeirah Carlton Tower in London’s Knightsbridge.
