Ellon United and Stonehaven could not be separated over the 90 minutes in their Dominos Pizza North Regional Cup tie at The Meadows last weekend with the result ending in stalemate at 0-0 to put the game into a penalty shoot-out.
The first eight penalties were clinically finished and when
Stonehaven’s fifth kick rather fortunately found the net off the post, the pressure was on.
Unfortunately United’s fifth attempt was just not hard enough nor sufficiently accurate and gave keeper Ellis the chance to make the relatively comfortable save which booked the visitors their second round place.
An evenly contested first half saw little goalmouth action as the sides cancelled each other out.
Stonehaven pressed forward at the start of the second period and had an effort cleared off the line before forcing a fine save from Morgan Cook.
United struck back and at the Stonehaven goal Ross Gibbon met two corners only for his normally so reliable heading ability to let him down as he was unable to find the target.
United made a double change in the 77th minute with James Bain and Fraser Gill coming on for Lenny Johnson and Callum Tremaine.
With time running out Fraser Gill did well to work his way into the danger area but the Stonehaven defenders managed to close him down and his shot was blocked and the tie moved on to the penalty shoot-out.
United worked hard throughout the 90 minutes without managing to pose enough of a threat to Ellis’ goal.
Some of the players who have been out for a spell lacked their normal sharpness so the hard workout will have done them good.
After their three cup games United get back to league duty next Saturday with a home game against Dufftown.
